Several Elite Island Resorts properties have received Green Hotel Certification, an independent recognition of environmental standards and practices, which includes both the efficient use of natural resources and improving relations between certified properties and their local communities.

The following key areas are considered before a property can receive certification: energy efficiency and management, greenhouse gas emissions, water conservation and management, indoor and outdoor air quality, waste management, facility management, policy and governance, purchasing, community, destination protection, conservation and management and cultural and social issues.

Green Hotel Certification incorporates the guidelines and recommendations of the following documents:

  • Green Globe Int. Standards
  • Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism Criteria (STC Partnership)
  • Baseline Criteria of the Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas
  • Agenda 21 and principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 Governments at the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992
  • The Mohonk Agreement
  • ISO (International Standard Organization) 9001 / 14001
  • European Eco Label
